Structural painting practice
Overview
Structural colour is made by structure, not by pigment. A beetle’s elytra or the inner surface of an abalone shell shifts colour with the viewing angle because layers and lattices on the scale of a wavelength of light sit on that surface, reinforcing certain wavelengths and cancelling others. Nothing has been painted; the structure produces the colour.
This series imitates that colour with pigment. Fine lattices and striations are built up in repetition across the surface, and at every overlap the colours are left slightly out of register. In the rhombic lattices the hue travels along each line; in the square lattice complementaries leak out at the seams; in the last piece a band of chromatic fringing survives only at the edges of a dense horizontal grain.
So this is not structural colour. It is acrylic made to look like structural colour, which is why it is called a practice. What the exercise was testing was not the colour but the method — whether repeated fine structure across a surface can itself produce colour.

What comes next
The next work stops imitating. Calcium carbonate will be crystallised directly on a chitosan matrix, so that the reaction by which barnacles, oysters and corals build their shells takes place on the surface itself. Instead of painting colour with a brush, the conditions are set and the crystals are left to grow. Not a depiction, but the event.
This series is the first gate into that shift — a first attempt at art and science, valued for changing the method rather than for the result.
